From Beyond Race Magazine: Alt-country musician Jay Farrar and Ben Gibbard of Death Cab for Cutie will be releasing a tribute album to author Jack Kerouac on October 20.
The 12-song collaborative effort, One Fast Move or I’m Gone: Kerouac’s Big Sur, will be the soundtrack to a documentary by the same name.
The two musicians are both big Kerouac fans, and jumped on board when approached by filmmakers in 2007 about writing music for the film, which documents Kerouac’s time in the Big Sur region of California.
“There was a familiarity to Kerouac’s words,” Farrar said to Billboard.com. “There was an element of a kid being left in charge of the candy store, in a way. Jack’s method of writing — the idea that you get raw ideas out there, the stream-of-consciousness method — I’ve always appreciated it.”
Gibbard and Farrar share vocals on the recordings that took place over three years. Brad Sarno is on pedal steel, Aaron Espinoza on bass for the title track and Mark Spencer on multiple instruments. Farrar contributes various guitars, percussion and harmonica elements, and Gibbard adds guitars as well as drums on several tracks. There is a tentative plan for a tour toward the end of October.
